Eye Health and Optometrists

Recent times have forced people to use technology provided by computers very frequently. This has resulted in people spending hours in front of the monitor everyday. Other than that, problems of high blood pressure due to tension in professional life, diabetes due to bad eating habits and exposure of the eyes to the sun have made way for more eye problems.

The dangerous thing however, in these cases, is that most people don’t take precautions or go for eye check ups on a regular basis until the problem becomes substantial. When you start having trouble reading from a distance, irritation in the eyes, hazy vision and chronic headaches you realize that it may be time to get that eye check up done.

Optometrists are professional medical experts who have trained intensively to treat patients with eye problems. Although their general activities revolve around children, those reaching 40 and those who are above 65, their work involves a lot of knowledge and precision to diagnose eye problems.

What Happens During an Eye Test?

1. Routine Questions
If this is your first visit to an optometrist you will probably be asked a few general questions regarding your lifestyle, daily routine and habits so that its becomes easier to discern what may be wrong with your eyes and what sort of treatment you will require.

2. Vision Test

Next comes the vision test. This can be done in several ways. The most common procedure is to make the patient read letters from a distance to find out the visionary defect he or she is suffering from. Once this test is done it may be followed by an electronic test that measures the angle of vision and the curvature of the cornea of the eye. These tests enable the optometrist to diagnose the eye power to the patient.

3. Prescription

Once the optometrist is sure of your problem with your eye you will be prescribed to wear reading or permanent glasses depending on the severity of the situation.

Optometrists require special equipment and technology in their chamber to proceed with eye tests. Therefore, if you experience any trouble or discomfort with your vision you should immediately get your eyes checked. Look for signs in your daily life that may indicate any problem you are facing. This includes troubled vision, shortsightedness (also known as myopia), longsightedness (hyperopia) and even presbyopia which is a special case of shortsightedness that occurs in aged individuals.

Problems such as glaucoma may even result in loss of vision if not treated in time. The fluid build up in the eyes put pressure on the retina which gradually impairs vision.

Diabetes and hypertension are other common instigators of eye problems. Cancer can also affect vision. These reasons make it extremely vital to go for regular eye check ups.

Other than wearing glasses there may be other treatments necessary to go through with in order to correct vision impairments. Therapeutic treatments, yoga and even certain eye exercises can help improve vision trouble.
