HDL May Protect Against Alzheimer's

In addition to being good for the heart, high levels of what is called “good cholesterol” may protect against Alzheimer’s, U.S. researchers said.

The study found that people aged 65 years who had the highest levels of high-density lipoprotein or HDL were 60 percent less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease over four years than people with lower levels of HDL.

And it does not seem to matter if people had higher HDL levels naturally or if they widely used drugs called Statins to increase the level of “good cholesterol”, researchers found.

The study highlights a potential medium to prevent Alzheimer’s disease, an incurable disease that destroys the brain and affects 26 million people around the world.

By increasing HDL, “you probably can reduce the incidence of Alzheimer’s disease in the population,” said the Dr. Christiane Reitz of the Taub Institute at Columbia University in New York, whose study appears in the Archives of Neurology.

His team studied 1,130 persons over age 65 who were white, black or Hispanic and lived in New York. Most were covered by Medicare, the federal insurance program for seniors.

When they began the study, volunteers had no history of memory and thinking problems. In the study, researches used medical and neurological data and conducted neuropsychological tests to diagnose Alzheimer’s disease.

They divided people in four groups or quartiles based on cholesterol readings. The higher group had HDL readings of 55 or more. Those in the lowest quartile had HDL below 38.

“The lowest quartile had a risk of 60 percent of developing Alzheimer’s disease over four years,” Reitz said in a telephone interview.

Reitz said the team concluded the participants had probable or possible Alzheimer’s disease instead of vascular dementia or other forms of dementia.

They also looked at other measures of cholesterol, total cholesterol, LDL and blood fats known form of triglycerides.

“We examined each of these measures independently.” “It seems to be an effect for HDL,” Reitz said.

A HDL reading of 60 or more is regarded as protection against heart disease, according to the American Heart Association.

Reitz said HDL in persons 55 years or more can be changed through diet and exercising. Some doctors prescribe also niacin, a b vitamin that can stimulate heart protection when HDL is 25 per cent, but this is not widely used because it causes patients to be uncomfortable.
